How to Maintain a Saddle Chair

A saddle chair is an ergonomically designed backless chair designed in the shape of a saddle. There are a range of different types of saddle chairs including the Salli range and the Bambach range. While the price depends on the type of saddle chair, they commonly cost between £350 and £500. If you are going to invest in one, it is important to know how to make the very most out of your purchase, and whilst good quality saddle chairs are very robust, there are a number of simple things you can do to preserve the life of the chair.

Protect the gas cylinder:

The gas cylinder is positioned between the saddle seat and the base and plays a fundamental role in enabling the raising and lowering of the chair. If you find that the chair is slow to respond to the height adjuster, it might be the case that the cylinder is beginning to catch on the outside casing. If this is the case, we suggest you spray a small amount of lubricant around the gas cylinder.

Protecting and cleaning the seat:

The most effective way of protecting the saddle seat is to use seat covers. Because of the unique shape of saddle chairs, we suggest you get these saddle covers from the supplier of the chair. If you decide that you don’t want to use a seat cover, it is important to maintain the upholstery regularly. Since most people opt for leather upholstery, we will focus on leather seat care. The key to effective leather care is to ensure that you remove any stains quickly. You could try a small amount of a light soap like Dove on a damp cloth and gently rub it on the area you want to clean. For long term leather maintenance, you can also use leather conditioners. However, it is worth bearing in mind that some conditioners can affect the colour of the leather and so we advise you to use the leather conditioner suggested by your chair supplier.

Maintaining your castors:

For most people keeping castors clean is fairly straight forward. In contrast, some occupations such as hairdressing can lead to a rapid build up of waste products in castors that need removal. When you want to clean the castors, you will often need to remove the locking device of the castor. Once the locking device is off you need to remove the side of the castor, which will give you access to any material clogged up inside.

Protecting the floor:

So far we have focused on how to protect the saddle chair. However, it is also worth noting that castors from saddle chairs can cause damage to hardwood floors. There are several ways in which you can protect your floor from damage including:

• Putting a rug down: the disadvantage of this is that the rug can reduce the manoeuvrability of the chair.
• Putting down a large piece of cardboard: the disadvantage of cardboard is that it looks very ugly.
• Putting down a transparent seat mat: this type of product both protects and preserves the look of the floor, whilst allowing great chair manoeuvrability
• Using soft castors: most good suppliers will be able to advise you about soft castor options which are hardwood floor friendly.
